The Western Province is the most populous province in Sri Lanka. Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, the capital of Sri Lanka, is also located in the this Province. That Province has a population of 5,648,000 and its total land area is 3,694.20 square kilometers. It has three districts. Namely, Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara.The land area of Colombo is 642 square kilometers, the area of Gampaha is 1386.6 square kilometers and the land area of Kalutara is 1606 square kilometers.

The Colombo Harbour is also a major driver of economic growth being the busiest port in South Asia. On one hand, there are many tourist attractions in the Western Province. The Galle Face Green which is considered as the heart of Colombo city. The current Galle Face area is about 5 hectares. It was built in 1859 by British Governor Sir Henry Ward for horse riding and golfing. Also Vihara Mahadevi Park is the oldest and largest park built in Colombo. It’s old name is Victoria Park. Further, Akade Independence Square is a luxury shopping complex in the city of Colombo. It’s a beautiful, central space with a food court, restaurants, and shopping, cushioned on a beautiful green expanse. Shady trees and neatly trimmed shrubs are arranged in this space in a very attractive manner.

Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens is the first rubber tree planted in Sri Lanka. It is also situated in this province. There are many well-known schools in the Western Province. Some of them are Royal College, Asoka College, Kotte Ananda Girls’ School and Anula Vidyalaya. Almost all the premier educational institutions in the island are located in the western province. Universities in the province include the University of Colombo, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the University of Kelaniya, the Open University of Sri Lanka, the Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, the University of Moratuwa and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology.

All religions are prevalent in the Western Province. It is a multi-religious province. As all religions exist, there are all religious places.There are many more places to visit in the Western Province. Most of the places are best tourist destinations. There are many luxurious hotels around the province and they contribute to increase tourism in Sri lanka.
