western ProvinceColombo District is located in the south west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 699 square kilometres. This District has 13 Divisional Secretary’s Division, and the Divisional Secretary’s Divisions are further sub-divided into 566 Grama Niladhari Divisions.
Colombo is the capital city among all other cities. The name ‘Colombo’, first introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, derived from the classical Sinhala name Kolon thota, meaning “port on the river Kelani”. The average annual temperature is 27.0 °C | 80.6 °F. The annual rainfall is 2348 mm | 92.4 inch. April is the warmest month of the year while December is the coldest month of the year.
Colombo grew as a seaport for trade between Asia and the West. It was used by the Moors, Romans, Arabs, Persians, and Chinese ships for the island’s much sought after cinnamon and gems. Some of the most delicious Sri Lankan street food is available in the evenings along Colombo’s coastline known as Galle Face. City dwellers around the Colombo are visited to enjoy outdoor activities like flying kites, taking a walk, playing in the water or eat up delicious street food like isso wade. The park was originally named “Victoria Park” but was renamed after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu following independence. The park is the best place to feel relaxation.
Independence Memorial Hall is one of the most popular tourist places in here. It is built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka. Therefore, most of the annual National Independence Day celebrations have been held here. Independence Square is the favorite spot for joggers in the mornings and evenings.
National museum of Colombo is the largest museum in Sri lanka which is based on Italian architecture style. It also famous among both locals and foreign travellers. Finally, there are many places to visit around in this district. Beira Lake, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Paradise Road, Pettah Floating Market, Laksala, Attidiya Bird Sanctuary, Dehiwala Zoo, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara and Leisure World are some of them.
