Puttalam is one of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka. Anamaduwa, Dankotuwa, Wennappuwa, Kalpitiya, Nattandiya, Palavi, Puttalam, Marawila and Chilaw are some cities in the districts and also among them Puttalam is the capital. The history of Puttalam dates back to the arrival of prince Vijaya. The name ‘Puttalam’ may be a modification of the tamil word. Uppuththalam, Uppu means salt and Thalam means salt production zone, which evolved in to the name Puttalam. The average annual temperature in Puttalam is 28.0 蚓 | 82.4 蚌. The annual rainfall is 1174 mm | 46.2 inch. The warmest month of the year is May and January has the lowest average temperature of the year. Situated at the centre of the coconut traingle, Puttalam is cconidered as the second largest coconut producer of the country. Further, popular beaches of this area are perfect for the fishing activities. Therefore, most of the people in this area are fishermen and is a leading dry-fish production area of the country.

This area owns many nature reserves which include the popular ones like Wilpattu National Park and the Puttalam Lagoon amongst others. Wilpattu National park is home to many beasts like Leopards, Elephants, Bears, Deer, Crocodiles, Reptiles and also ample verities of birds. Therefore it was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Although, Wilpattu is a famous destination among both locals and tourists because it provides jeep safari to explore the park. Then,it causes to sight the free behavior of animals in the park.
