Kalutara is one of the 25 districts in Sri lanka. Horana, Ingiriya, Panadura, Mathugama, Agalawatta, Kalutara, Aluthgama, Beruwala, Bandaragama and Dodangoda are some cities in the district and among them Kalutara is the capital. Once an important spice-trading cantre, the city’s name is derived from the River ‘Kalu’.This area is well known to produce the Mangosteens, which is used for stimulating the immune system and improving mental health. A slice of this luscious purple fruit with juicy white flesh is not to be missed. Because it is more tasty than think.The climate in Kalutara is hot and from mid December to early March is the best time of year to visit Kalutara for hot-weather activities. The 38-metre long Kalutara Bridge was built at the mouth of the River Kalu and erves as a major link between the country’s western and southern border.

There are so many destinations to visit in Kalutara district. Kalutara bodhiya, Richmond Castle, Kalutara beach, Thudugala Ella Waterfall, Ranjiths Carving and Batik Museum, Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple and Bodhinagala Forest Hermitage are some of them. A sacred religious site of the Buddhism religion, Kalutara Bodhiya remains a must visit the location where Buddhists seek to visit at least once in their lifetime. It is an old Bodhi tree which is identified as one of the 32 saplings of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. However, according to the every citizens in country, Kalutara bodhi, stupa and the Kalu ganga are the symbols that symbolized the district well.

One one hand, Thudugala Ella Waterfall is the other destination visited by large chunk of tourists today. It’s a natural stream pool surrounded by “Ketala” plants and fern. Therefore, travellers love to bath here. Several migratory and local birds are witnessed nearby this waterfall in the forest reserve close to it.The hermitage in Dombagaskanda also known as the Bodhinagala Forest Hermitage in Sri Lanka, nestling on the bank of the Kalu Ganga near the Dombagaskanda hill in the outskirts of Ingiriya. It is famous for serenity and fresh environment. And its natural rainforests literally separate the hermitage from the bustling urban lifestyle. Therefore, it is a good place to practise meditation for bhikkhus in hermitage. Bhikkhus live and meditate in the small kuti in the hermitage. In some period, foriegn bhikkhus come to medidate, having left all their wealth and loved ones.
