The southeastern regions of Sri Lanka are known as arid zone. The rainfall is limited to three months in October, November and December. And the average annual rainfall is about 750-1250 mm. About 6 months of the year are seen in the drought. Cloudlessness and high evaporation also increase the atmospheric temperature.

The soil is sandy and the soil is very hot in this arid zone. In the period 1965-1961, the Wet Zone, Dry Zone and Intermediate Zone was divided into major climatic zones, taking into consideration the fact that the rainfall variation between the wet zone and the dry zone is characterized by the division of Sri Lanka into the climatic zones.
