Monaragala is one of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka. Bibile, Kataragama, Wellawaya, Buttala, Thanamalwila, Madulla, Siyambalanduwa, okkampitiya, Bandalkumbura, are some cities in the districts and also among them Monaragala is the capital. Monaragala is located in dry zone of Srilanka and majority of the involved in agriculture activities. Paddy is the main cultivations and there are many vegetable and fruit producers as well.
Buddism is the prediominant religion in Monaragala.There are famous National Parks are Gal oya national park,Yala national park in Monaragala District.The tourist attractions are Katharagama,Maligawila,Buduruwagala,Yala National Park,Gal Oya National Park .Kataragama is a Pilgrimage town sacred to buddhist and hindu. The Town has a Kataragama Temple. Kataragama is a small village which is protected by God ‘Kadha Surindu’. Kataragama ancient place of Kirivehera Stupa, is one of the sacred Buddhist religious items in the island .The Esala Perahera at Kataragama is a most popular and attractive holy festival in Sri laknka.
By the way, the City Monaragala got its name from a sinhalees meaning of ‘peacock habitat rock’majority of the area of this districts is natural forest.Buduruwagala is a prominent Buddhist heritage site. Buduruwagala statues are beleived to be belonging to 10th century,the statue is 51 feet high.Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. The gateway to Yala national park is Tissamaharama. And the main aim of the park is to conservation of Sri Lankan Elephants and aquatic birds. Further, the park gives the best opportunity to witness Sri Lanka’s board variety of wildlife Leopards can be throughout the park. Yala safari is the most famous among both locals and tourists because it helps to see wild animals with their free behavoir.
The Menik Ganga is the thirteenth-longest river of Sri Lanka. Further is is considered as the symbol of Kataragama. It runs across two privinces and two disricts. Menik Ganga one of the most famous river in Sri Lanka, is used to bathed before go to the temple by pilgrimagers.The other main destination is Biso Pokuna at Galabedda.
